Palm Springs Film Festival - Natalie & Carey

Two women-- one who received an Oscar nomination for Closer in 2005, the other an Oscar nomination for An Education, last year--are not your typical Young Hollywood. They are far more grounded & serious about their careers than the "It Girls" who use their looks to compensate for actual acting talent.  Carey Mulligan and Natalie Portman are amongst the creme de la creme when it comes to their acting and poise on the Hollywood scene.  Although Natalie Portman is not a newcomer, her sense of mystery & private life has kept us knowing very little about her. Last night however, her recent engagment ring and pregnancy left the stunning actress looking luminous at the Palm Springs Film Festival. Her look included a black Vionna dress along with the golden detailing on the collars and cuffs. Having a slight smokey eye look gave her a delicate Black Swan look, instead of a dramatic one from the film. She's got the Harvard degree, the engagement ring, so all that's missing is that Oscar ! As for Carrey Mulligan, a textured Prada dress did her just fine.  The black belt helped her outfit look young, and flattered the waistline. Keeping a minimal on accessories with classic black pumps left Carrey looking like a polished star.

Stylishly talented on both the big-screen & red-carpet, Carey rocks a red Prabal Gurung dress and a Roger Viver clutch, at the Moet British Independent Film Awards.

Carey in a Chanel dress

Meet the face of Daisy Buchanon, Carey Mulligan ! The Great Gatsby is by far one of my favorite works of literature by F. Scott Fitzgerald.  I'm so ecstatic that one of my newly favorite actresses has been confirmed to starr opposite Leonardo DiCaprio, who will play Jay Gatsby. If you're familiar with the novel, you already know Daisy is the epitome of charm & beauty in Gatsby's eyes. Although she covets luxurious, materialistic , & shallow ideals, I've always invisioned Daisy as a classy and admirable character--perhaps biased with my interest in fashion. ;]

I have to point out that I love the 1920's fashion era due to its relevance in fashion trends, including the empowerment of women, which significantly impacted their style. Voting rights aquired in 1920, lead women to express their inviduality with shorter heamlines and a focus on fashion (i.e. Flappers). A passage in the novel points out, "with the influence of the dress her personality had also undergone a change" (Fitzgerald). Although this passage is in regard to another character, it is taken out of the context of one of Gatsby's glamourous parties.  That said, the transformation of how women dressed to reflect their power and independance, mirrored social changes in that era.
