Best Dressed: Oscars 2012

 photos courtesy of Style Bistro

The Oscars are my equivalent to the Superbowl, as for most of you readers (although my friends and I opted for pink champagne, cheese + crackers, and other Oscar-viewing hor d'evours instead of greasy super bowl-y nachos). Here, without further ado, are the ladies who brought their sartorial game face for Hollywood's glitziest night:

 Gwyneth Paltrow in Tom Ford:
And the Best Dressed pick goes to... Gwyneth! Finally, a fashion statement. The floor-length cape ensemble was an iconic red carpet moment—thanks Mr. Tom Ford! (cue: "hashtag chic to the next lev! It's almost *too* chic)

Jessica Chastain - custom-made Alexander McQueen bustier gown
How could I not include Sarah Burton's masterpiece? This dress in phenomenal. The minimal makeup lets the drama of the detailed silk and gold embroidery of the baroque style gown do ALL the talking. Fun Fact: the Harry Winston jewelry alone was worth 2 million dollars—what economy crisis?!

Angelina Jolie - Atelier Versace
Holy moly Jolie. Thank Angie's high-thigh slit for the Twitter phenomenon that is @AngiesRightLeg. Sure, even I was surprised of her overly confident (nay, cocky) posing onstage, but the women gave viewers what they wanted—for that, her right leg deserves a nomination. Pose and pop away, Jolie dearest.

Rose Byrne -Vivienne Westwood one-shoulder black sequin gown
I've been paying close attention to this one, and she is becoming more and more relevant with every look she pulls off. First the jumpsuit at the SAG awards, and now this stunning sequined number—loving it.

Mila Jovovich - Elie Saab dress
This was the first look I saw on the red carpet—I was pleased! Also, I had no idea who she was (nor do I currently know). What I do know: this Elie Saab one-shoulder frock and look is simply perfect for the Oscars—a sparkly white beaded gown that brings old-Hollywood to mind, yet remains modern.

Rooney Mara - Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci
The Girl with the Givenchy Dress. Vogue Daily describes her statement making beauty and hairstyle as the "Rooney Mara effect". I call it the "Maria-wishes-she-could-pull-off-an-edgy-blunt-look-as-this effect".  Her trademark bangs + bold red lips are flawless against her milk-white skin and make the Givenchy dress truly a look of her own.

Cameron Diaz - Gucci Premiere nude dress
The metallic detailing on the nude gown did it for me. Also a plus: she's always pretty and smiling.

Giuliana Ranci - Basil Soda
Giuliana has been donning Basil Soda for a few events now, and looked like a vision on the red carpet. Everything from the beading + rhinestones to the shoulder stitching makes this gown by Lebanese designer, beautiful.

84th Annual Academy Awards: Who Wore What? Jessica Chastain in Alexander McQueen Resort 2012

Jessica Chastain in Alexander McQueen Resort 2012: Jessica Chastain looked like a Medieval Princess in this slightly modified Gown from Alexander McQueen's Resort 2012 Collection.

The collection is now designed by Sarah Burton and I love the way she added even more drama by continuing the embroidery down the skirt.

In these close ups you can see the stunning beading and embroidery work and how beautiful it looks against Jessica's Red hair.

Let me know what you think?!!

Runway Report: Armani Prive Spring 2012--Photos + Runway Video!

Haute Sea Creatures

Underwater Fab: Armani Prive Spring 2012

Continuing with Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week, the Italian Master--Giorgio Armani-showed his Armani Prive Spring 2012 Collection. It featured 44 looks all in varying shades of green. Now, something must be in the air--first Karl Lagerfeld showed his Chanel Haute Couture Collection all in varying shades of blue, now Armani--but in green this time. What's next? Next season, another designer will show their Haute Couture Collection in all shades of purple?? (or maybe I should for my next NIKOLAKI collection!!).

Russian Dolls: Elena Perminova and Miroslava Duma at the Armani Prive Spring 2012 show

Present for the showing were a bevy of Armani-ites--from Russian billionaire Alexander Lebedev's wife and part-time model, Elena Perminova and Miroslava Duma, former editor of Russian Harper's Bazaar and Russian fashion icon--to actresses like...

Jessica Chastain--who in fact, got word of her Academy Award Nomination for Best Supporting Actress as she was sitting down for the show. She had the nerve to answer her cell phone as the Armani Prive show was about to start: Mon Dieu!! Thank goodness she did (there were shrieks and claps being heard right before the beginning of the show). Well, I have a very strong feeling that Chastain might be wearing Armani Prive to the Oscars. I might even bet money on it.

Green Sea Creature: Armani Prive Spring 2012

Now, onto the show: The all-shades-of-green collection was called "Metamorphosis". Something about a woman who changes from being calm and elegant and slowly "comes out of her skin". As one can see from the photos in this posting, the varying shades of green--from hunter green, apple green, to chartreuse--were beautiful. In terms of fabrications, Armani and his Couture atelier always deliver stupendous modern fabrics with sci-fi elements such as metalized silk satins, gazar, organza and oversized paillettes and beading.

Shoulder Chic: Armani Prive Spring 2012

The show began with the incredible craftsmanship of Armani's suits; those architectural shoulders that slant ever so slightly upward and probably required hours upon hours of draping and tailoring to get it just right. His skirts were side-draped and folded in an original way, bringing life to the otherwise same-old same-old pencil skirt.

Princess Beatrice Is Calling: Armani Prive Spring 2012

Haute Milliner Philip Treacy, created the twisted miniature fascinators to help bring to life Armani's Metamorphosized "creatures of the sea" and there were some fingerless driving gloves that Madonna would LOVE. Here are more photos from the collection and take special note of the final gowns in this posting--these have Academy Awards Red Carpet written ALL OVER them! Hello Jessica Chastain!
